The faculty of the Los Rios Community College District was presented the Student Success Award for creative approaches towards student success on Nov. 21.
Every year Dr. Jack Scott, Chancellor of the California Community Colleges League, gives a California community college district's faculty the award.
Cosumnes River College's Vice Chancellor of Education and Technology William Karns said that a community college district must meet a length roster of requirements to be considered for the award.
"They had certain pieces of evidence that they required," Karns said. "So it also gave you a sense what they were looking for." To meet the criteria for the award, the Los Rios District had to demonstrate measured progress in the last twelve months towards reaching its goals and the impact that the faculty has had on students. The district also had to provide examples of how they made advancements in promoting student equity and opportunity on their campuses.
Professor of Radio, Television and Film Production Richard Snowden said he believes that the Los Rios faculty did met the requirements for the award.
"More recently faculty from across the district have work diligently to make sure every student have the best possible opportunity for success," said Snowden.
William Karns also explained that the CRC campus in particular helped the Los Rios faculty increase its chances by indicating their own response to the Education Initiative.
He said CRC created special Freshman Seminars that made the transition into college life and classes be supported by a special curriculum.
Also there was CRC's Math Resign Project in elementary algebra and the key changes made to the Diop Scholars Program.
"It is important to remember that it was not just the CRC faculty, but the whole of the Los Rios CCD faculty that got the award," Karns said.
Snowden agreed and said that sharing the award with all the faculty across the district was an honor.
"The fact that all Los Rios faculty received this award is a testament to the high level of professionalism the faculty has demonstrated over the years, " Snowden said.
"The Los Rios faculty are a family and it's great to share this honor with everyone." Carla Turner, a 21-year old English major, said that the award reflects the district's attitude towards equal opportunity.
"I do believe that they promote that everybody has a chance to succeed when they enroll into a Los Rios school," Turner said.
