For the first time, Cosumnes River College students will have the opportunity to train and compete in a triathlon class over summer school.

Coral Sage, the women's basketball coach and a fitness instructor at CRC, said that she wrote the curriculum for this new class because she has competed in six sprint triathlons and that her "experience has been great."

Triathlon competitions are composed of swimming, cycling and running events. In order to prepare students for this, Sage will focus the class on training students in these areas, along with strength training.

A fitness class that spans over so many different forms of aerobic activity may sound intimidating to some students, and Sage agrees that the workout will be somewhat intense.

However, Sage says that the workout will be "tailored toward the fitness level of each individual student." This means that all students are encouraged to participate, regardless of the state of their current physical fitness.

The class will meet Monday, Wednesday, and Friday mornings from 9 to 10:55 during the summer school session.

Students must have their own bike and helmet in order to participate in the class, and also be willing to occasionally travel for training sessions. Basic swimming skills are also a pre-requisite.

A portion of the class will include participating in, or at least attending, an actual triathlon held at Rancho Seco. Students are strongly encouraged to compete.

Sage has been promoting the triathlon class in her spring yoga classes. One of her yoga students, Matt Lodel, a 21-year-old broadcasting major, said that the class "should be interesting from what I've heard."

From her own experiences competing in triathlons, Sage feels that the best reason to enroll in the new class is simple: "you get into great shape and it's super fun."
